Northern Roots 09 - the byre

Bogbain is developing its role as a cultural heritage centre. Music, art and heritage are at the heart of most of the new developments taking place at the farm.

In 2010 Bogbain will again host its own music festival, Northern Roots. This is an acoustic, roots music festival which aims to focus in on singer songwriters and up and coming bands. It was started with great success in 2009 Please have a look at the blog www.northernrootsfestival.wordpress.com to see pictures, videos and reviews of the event.

Northern Roots also promotes music at the farm throughout the year. Monthly concerts have been scheduled with artists ranging from Dick Gaughan to Blazin Fiddles to Tim O’Brien and  Emily Smith. It is hoped that an acoutic music club can be developed to help promote these events.

Sunday Afternoon Ceilidhs

Due to popular demand we are holding 2 Ceilidhs per month, usually the middle and last Sunday of the month, we host a very informal Sunday afternoon ceilidh. Local musicians play and sing, and members of the audience are welcome to join in, or to perform their own pieces. Music starts at 3pm, and we do a Sunday roast every week from 1pm, so you can make an afternoon of it.

Booking is essential as these have proven to be VERY popularThe farm has also been used for events such as the “Ford Old skool” classic car rally and many charities have used it for events

Bogbain and Northern Roots Festival have been delighted to have been working in association with artist and author, Paul Taggart. Paul is an exceptional painter who specialises in heritage techniques and works in oils, watercolours, pastels and acrylics.

“As a professional Fine Artist, Paul Taggart’s work has sold consistently for nigh on 30 years, with 60 plus exhibitions to his name. His work is to be found in many private collections with paintings in the Middle East, Far East, Europe and America. Though his early work was sold through galleries, most of his exhibitions are privately held these days, or organised for charity fundraising purposes.”

Bogbain’s director is Bruce MacGregor, musician broadcaster and composer. His career has been wide and varied, from playing with multi award winning Blazin Fiddles  to gaelic super group Cliar, to writing music for film, TV and being commissioned by  Jacobite Experience to compose music for their cruises down Loch Ness to working for the BBC.

As a presenter and producer for BBC Radio Scotland he has created award winning programmes that focus in on history, music and sport.

The farm itself  has significant historical interest being one of the finest examples of the agricultural revolution that swept Scotland in the 19th century. It was featured in BBC Scotland’s Nick Nairn’s Landward in 2009
