“We were at Bogbain to celebrate the boy’s 80th year, but his 160th birthday. For Murdo, like many islanders born around the time, (just like The Queen, too) has two birthdays. The first was the day of his birth, 10th August. The second, his ‘official’ birthday, the 21st, was the date his father told the Registrar he’d been born. It was a long journey from home to the Registry Office. His father had been at sea. To have registered the birth late would have incurred a fine, so there was creativity with the dates.

What a great night we had. A proper ceilidh. A feast, a drink or two, a few tunes from Bruce McGregor’s fiddle, then Gaelic songs, stories, warmth and good cheer well into the evening.There may be fewer than 60,000 Gaelic speakers in Scotland today, but what a valuable tradition the ceilidh is. What a great way for a community of friends, family and neighbours to celebrate.”
