Record Breaking Weekend
Inverness archer and founder of the new Highland Archery Club, Mr. Paul MacGregor set no less than six Scottish records at the weekend during the Glasgow Archers Open tournament.
Setting new barebow Scottish records at 90m, 70m, 50m and 30m with a new Gents’ FITA overall record on Saturday, and then a York record which includes distances of 100 yards, 80 yards and 60 yards on the Sunday. Barebow shooting is the discipline that means shooting a standard recurve bow with all the sights, stabilisers and clickers removed.
“This was a great confidence booster after a disappointing British Championship the weekend before, but I think it may have had something to do with the venue, as two weeks before I was awarded ‘the most improved archer’ award at the Scottish Championships which were also held there. I have only shot barebow a couple of times before in competition, once setting a Scottish record indoors, but we do shoot a lot of barebow during training, as it is great for working on basic technique.” said MacGregor, who only picked up a bow for the first time three years ago, and is in
his second year of competing. “I hope my success will encourage people to come along to the newly formed Highland Archery Club, which is now affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS) and the Scottish Archery Association (SAA). Archery is a totally inclusive sport, and can be enjoyed by people from 8 to eighty, able bodied or not.
I put a lot of my success down to the fantastic facilities we have here in Inverness both on Monday nights at Raigmore Community Centre (where I was also employed by the Highland Council to run the archery for their active schools programme during the holidays) and the outdoor facilities at Bogbain Farm which are the most comprehensive in the north of Scotland, and which are now used by the SAA for coaching courses. We have recently added an indoor facility at Bogbain which will allow practice and have-a-go sessions throughout the winter, making Bogbain one of only three full facility archery centres in Scotland.”
Paul is now looking for sponsorship for next season to enable him to compete in the UK’s National Series. “Travelling around Scotland for tournaments is expensive enough, but now having to travel to England for tournaments, and with coaching, training and upgrading my equipment is very expensive, so help from a local business would be very much appreciated.”
Details of the Highland Archery Club and questions about sponsorship can be directed to Paul on paul@archery-inscotland.org or 07974 240738.

Low Anthem

We are absolutely delighted to be welcoming Mojo award winners “Low Anthem” to Bogbain on the 28th August. Here’s a review of their critically acclaimed album “Oh my God, Charlie Darwin”

“The band The Low Anthem isn’t your typical band. Sure, all three band members (Ben Knox Miller, Jeff Prystowsky, and Jocie Adams) come from Providence, Rhode Island which might provide a partial explanation.

But only the love for music could explain how a baseball, jazz, and American history scholar (Prystowsky), a NASA technician (Adams), and a painter (Miller) got together to make their brand of blues and folk — which is a long way from their classical music roots.

The Low Anthem’s third album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin is consistent in its introspective approach to remind the world there remains beauty and serenity. Part of this success comes from the album being recorded in a distant cabin on Block Island, Rhode Island.

Much of the band’s success stems from their down-to-earth sensibility. Acting as their own agent to book shows, the band maintains a strong work ethic to keep them grounded, which Miller recounts, “we learned from all that grassroots sweat how the business side works. So we never had to rely on anyone but the community to come out. It’s been natural and very human”

Tickets are £10 and are already selling VERY fast so if you don’t want to miss out please book immediately!

Northern Roots Music Club

Northern Roots festival held in June was a great success with some stunning performances. We have now launched the Northern Roots Music Club which is for those who enjoy folk, country, roots, Cajun, blues ….anything but mainstream! If you are on Facebook why not join us and find out what is happening.

There are also video clips from this year’s festival being posted up by our good friends Eileen Tunnel and Paul Taggart on you tube and on the Northern Roots Music Club and Bogbain Facebook pages.

There will be more news about music sessions and archery club in our next bulletin!

“Fresh off the podium, here are The MOJO Honours List 2010 winners…
The MOJO Breakthrough Act (presented by Glenfiddich)
Winner: The Low Anthem

Phil Alexander (MOJO’s Editor-In-Chief): “The Low Anthem are a classic American band in the making. Their last album, Oh My God Charlie Darwin, which came out on Bella Union last year, fired up the MOJO readers’ imagination with its mix of Dylan-meets-Waits Americana. To be honest, they’re still a well kept secret but this year will belong to them. MOJO readers prove themselves once again one step ahead of the pack by voting them the Breakthrough Act of the last 12 months.”

Tickets are £10 (with a 2.5% booking fee for cards) and there are only 120 available so if you want to be at this moment in history…book now 01463772800
